Pick a Derby Winner with 2 easy Steps

  1. Go With Experience – If they did it before, they can do it again! Bet on the jockey. No current jockey has come close to Calvin Borel’s three first place finishes since 2008. Bet on the trainer.  Bob Baffert has received the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer and has had three Derby winners since 1997. So if you are going with experience, here are your bets: Ride on Curlin (Borel), Hoppertunity (Baffert), and Bayern DT (Baffert).

  2. Stay Away from the Long Shots – While you can get lucky and win big, it is safer to place small bets for fun on big long shots and maybe get a decent payday. The trouble with long shorts is most of the time you are going to lose. They may have a cheaper price, but is it really worth the risk? You might throw down $5.00 to win on a long shot, but would you throw down $5,000.00?

The truth is I have never picked a derby winner; I’m a roofer, so you probably shouldn’t take my advice on horses. (My advice does work when choosing a contractor!) The best piece of advice I can give is to go with experience because you are only as good as what you have done in the past.  And stay away from the long shots.

Good Luck and Happy Derby!
