Thermoplastics

Thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) single-ply roofing membranes are among the fastest growing commercial roofing products and have gained broad industry acceptance for their many performance and installation advantages. As demand increases for heat-reflective and energy efficient roofing systems, TPO single-ply roofing membranes continue to provide exceptional resistance to ultraviolet, ozone and chemical exposure.

Common thicknesses for TPO are 45 and 60 mils, but 80 mils is also available when increased impact and puncture resistance is needed. Most frequently, TPO systems are installed using fasteners installed in the seam area or by gluing the sheet to the insulation board (fully adhered).

TPO roofing systems are one of the most economical options out there and are gaining a track record for lasting through the warranty period. Like any good roof, the issues are mainly in the details. The workmanship that is done during the installation of the roof is ultimately going to be the difference maker in whether or not a TPO roofing system lives up to its warranty period. Like any roofing system the roof is only as good as the flashings and with TPO it takes an experience contractor to make sure every inch of each lap, joint and patch is heat welded at the right temperature and properly rolled in. You cannot speed this process up or slow it down, each TPO sheet has a temperature range that has to be used along with the right timing to ensure a lasting weld. Many contractors under bid their work and then try to increase their production time by welding the laps faster resulting in a roof that will begin to have problems in the years to come.
